An electric shock injury is an injury which occurs when an electric current passes through the body. The body is a good conductor of electricity and direct contact with electrical current can often be fatal. Electric shocks are responsible for approximately 1,000 deaths per year in the United States. Electric shock injuries may be caused by such things as accidental contact with the exposed parts of electrical appliances, young children sticking metal objects into an electrical outlet or by accidental contact with high-voltage power lines which may carry over 7,000 volts of electricity.
