On February 20th, we wrote a blog regarding the gas explosion which occurred in Kansas City, MO. At the time, twelve were reported injured but there had been no deaths. This coming week, however, there will be two funeral services for the only victim of the explosion. Twenty-six-year-old M.C. was pulled from the wreckage of the explosion the day after the event. She was working at JJ’s restaurant at the time of the explosion.
M.C. grew up in Springfield, MO where she graduated from Parkview High School. Her family still lives in Springfield and this is where the funerals will take place. After high school, she attended the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law and while there she helped organize the first lesbian and gay student group. Rather than receive flowers, her family has asked people to donate to a charity in her name.
In regards to the events leading up to the explosion, it has been confirmed that the company that was excavating in the area right before the explosion did not have a permit to do so. They were laying a fiber optic cable when the boring machine they were using hit a two inch gas line. Only one hour later, JJ’s restaurant exploded.
The reason the gas leak ignited is still unknown, but it is thought that the ignition occurred in the restaurant.
